About Patan

The area of the state known as North Gujarat is constituted of four districts : Patan, Mehsana, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha. The university was established with a view to catering to the cultural and educational needs of these areas, on 17th May, 1986 by the Gujarat State Government. Patan is officially designated as the Head-Quarter of the University and the district.

The Present town of Patan was formally known as Anhilpur Patan. It was established on the banks of holy river Saraswati by Vanaraj Chavda in 745. During 745 to 1411 it had been the capital city of a large kingdom extending far beyond and bounds of present day Gujarat under the Solanki rules and a very important seat of Jain Scholarship. It is a holy land of Hemchandracharya, a great thinker who made valuable contribution to the studies of grammer, literature, religion and philosophy. The ranki-vav ( unique stepwell) - a great architecture and sculptural monument of yester years, the lakes of Shahstralinga and Siddhi Sarovar, the Jain temples of Panchasara and few other remains in and around the place testify the glory that was Patan. Patan is also known for PATOLU. Patolu is unparalleled and orginal handy craft in the world.
